It is excellent for aches, sprains, and eliminating mucus from the lungs.

Mustard plasters are usually placed on the chest to draw out mucus congestion, dispel coldness, relieve asthma, eliminate coughs and heal colds and flu.

They can also be put on other places to treat body and joint aches and pains and heal watery, oozing and chronic sores and boils. When we kids got chest colds, it was applied directly on the chest (skin), had the consistency of Vicks VapoRub, and was then covered with a thich cotton cloth. Boy, did it work! I now have a nasty chest cold that my doc can't cure even with tons of inhalers, antibiotics, nebulizers, steroids, even had all kinds of xrays and nobody can figure it out. I remembered how well Musterole and finally looked it up, will use it tonight because I know it works! Musterole was probably pulled off the market because it burned someone's skin - I'm not surprised. Be careful with that mustard.

Comment by mlmhelotes

The egg white prevents burning/blistering of the skin.

Comment by mlmhelotes

The correct recipe is: 3 tblsp flour; 2 tblsp mustard; one egg white; mix thoroughly

Comment by deeziner

You can also use mustard seed and grind it in a coffee grinder just before you use it - more potent than pre-ground mustard, which has lost a lot of its potency from months of storage.

As the writer states, you don't want the mixture to touch your skin, that's why you use a towel or an old T-shirt (use something cotton, not synthetic.)

Comment by deeziner

One word: TRIPOD!

This would be a better video if your arm was not blocking half of it, or if the camera wasn't wandering around while you tried to mix with one hand and hold the camera with the other. You can find a cheap tripod at a thrift store ...

Good instructions though.

Comment by Dawn Peters

Lighthouse: no.. it should be disposed of after using it!

Comment by lighthouse64

Thank you for this information! I'm just wondering, can the Plaster be reused if needed if it is warmed up again? (maybe or microwave?) Or should it be disposed after use? Thanks bunches! :-)

Comment by Dawn Peters

replying to kashmala: Put the mixture into the towel, fold the towel to cover the mix, then apply the towel on the area you need. the mix does not touch the body at all.. hope this helps!

Comment by daughterol

I've heard about people using mustard packs to break up congestion. Never knew how to make one or how to use one. Great information. I can use this next time one of us has congestion.

Comment by preciousbellaj

I will have to remember this when i have my next chest cold!
