With all their speed and beauty, a supercar can be a real thrill to see up close. While they stand out with their exotic appearance alone, the exceptional power and handling truly set them apart from other vehicles. Most supercars are rare, especially pre-1960 supercars; however, if you're on the lookout, there are several models of note.
A supercar can generally be regarded as any car with a powerful V8 engine such as vehicles created by Lamborghini and Ferrari. Owning a supercar like that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and is simply not practical. However, you can rent a supercar for the day -- or try out more than one at special events -- at a fraction of the cost. Although the companies will not allow you to actually drive across the USA, you will be able to tour the area around the event or race on a specified track.
"Supercars" have evolved quite a lot over the years. Not so long ago, supercars were essentially overpowered pieces of sculpture. They may have boasted of avant-garde styling and advanced engineering, but the fact is that most weren't nearly as "super" as their styling would suggest. The post-2000 supercar is a different animal entirely, with many offering levels of performance, comfort, safety and reliability undreamed of previously.
For as long as there have been cars, there has been a desire to make them go faster and be more outrageous. Eventually, this aspiration led to the creation of the supercar. Found in posters on the walls of car enthusiasts everywhere, supercars are the things dreams are made of. Their history is rich with creativity, passion and a touch of lunacy.
Some people call them art cars, others prefer the term mutant vehicles. Filmmaker Harrod Blank settled for calling them wild wheels, which is what he titled his documentary about these customized vehicles. These are the rolling sculptures that inspire passerby to look and look again, posing the question, "Did a spaceship land on the hood of that car?" Absolutely.
