Dam Square is a popular site for tourists visiting Amsterdam, as it features attractions such as the 15th century cathedral, Nieuwe Kirk, and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. This square was initially established as a dam for the Amstel River in the 13th century, but grew as a major shopping and cultural hub. It's significance was added when Amsterdam's City Hall, which had been located on the square since 1655, became the Royal Palace in 1808.
