    Consuming alcohol during pregnancy has the potential to result in severe physical and mental defects that can follow the baby throughout its entire life. While some birth defects and complications are unavoidable, those caused by the consumption of alcohol are entirely unnecessary.     A typical pregnancy can last 40 weeks. During this nine-month period, the pregnant woman must visit a family practitioner or obstetrician to monitor the health of the fetus as well as check the progress of the pregnancy. Women who are taking over-the-counter or prescription drugs must undergo additional care to check that the fetus is not experiencing effects as a result of the medication.     The effects of alcohol consumption on a baby in utero are extremely severe. Though there is speculation on the severity of effects on a baby that is being breastfed, in an article by the La Leche League, it was stated that in large consumption, a baby can still suffer from "possible" side effects of its mother's alcohol consumption.
