Travel in Western Europe is relatively easy if you do your research. Large metropolitan cities like Frankfurt and Munich have several means of travel, including air, autobahns and extensive railway systems. Munich is in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany. It has a population of about 1.3 million people and many museums, castles and world class restaurants. It's also the home of Oktoberfest. This free event is held from late September to early October. The first Oktoberfest was held to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in 1810.
The historic city of Munich draws millions of vacationers every year, and not just for Octoberfest. Founded in 1158, the city has a rich history and many sites of interest to visit. The Munich airport is located about 30 minutes from the center of the city and has many hotels in and around the area with convenient travel links.
Germany has a number of large airports that, with its railways, serve as a hub of its transport system. The capital of Berlin is served by a number of smaller airports, with the larger airports being based in former West Germany in the industrial and cultural centers. Cheap domestic and European flights have meant that German airports have been growing in size.
Munich has one main international airport, Franz Josef Strauss Airport (MUC), that serves the majority of its air transportation needs. There are two much smaller airports located west of the city that serve regional needs within Bavaria, as well as some low-cost airline carriers: Augsburg Muehlhausen Airport (AGB) and Memmingen Allgau Airport (FMM).
