Training your dog is critical to making it an obedient, confident, happy and welcome member of your family. There are many styles of dog training, but there are recognized best practices that will ensure your pup responds to you as pack leader and becomes a well-mannered member of society.
Training a dog to obey basic commands such as stay and sit can be a challenge for many dog owners. While some dogs learn easily, others seem to refuse to learn commands. However, once a dog has learned basic obedience skills, dog owners may be tempted to see how far they can take their pooch's training. Advanced obedience training relies on the same principles used to teach basic obedience.
Rally obedience, or "Rally-O," is a type of dog training that allows dog and owner to work together as a team, building a bond and training the dog at the same time. Rally courses designed by a judge consist of at least 10 stations, each one with a sign that informs the owner which command should be performed. Rally is less strict than regular competitive obedience, and levels include novice, advanced and excellent.
Advanced dog training can take many forms. After you've completed basic obedience training with your dog, your options are nearly unlimited. Trying a canine sport such as Agility is fun for both dog and handler. If your dog is an American Kennel Club-registered purebred, you can earn titles to add to your dog's registered name. You could train your dog as a therapy dog or join a search and rescue team.
