Drapery Treatments for a Bow Window

Drapery Treatments for a Bow Window thumbnail
Bow windows are in the shape of a curve.

A bow window is a bay window in the shape of a curve. It projects from the wall to form an alcove and may include anywhere from three to seven separate windows. Dressing a bow window is easy to pull off, as long as each window in the bow is treated in similar fashion. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Drapes

    • There are several options for curtains or draperies for a bow window. The panels can be hung on a continuous curved rod following the arch of the bow or they can be hung from a rod that runs across the bow in a straight line, framing the alcove. If the bow window is small, single panels on either end should suffice.

    Large Bow

    • If the bow window is large, or if there is wall space between the windows of the bow, drapery panels can be hung between each window and on either end. To further unite the windows, hang sheers or inside-mount window shades on each window. For a clean-lined look, try roman or roller shades. For a romantic look, use balloon shades.

    Top Treatment

    • Another option for dressing a bow window is a top treatment, such as a valance, cornice or swag. The top treatment can curve around the bow, or extend straight across the alcove for a more contemporary look. Top treatments can be used with or without draperies. Shades or blinds can be added to provide privacy.

    Deep Bow

    • In the case of a deep bow window, adding a window seat below it anchors the area, writes Caroline Clifton-Mogg, author of ''Curtains: A Design Source Book.'' The cushions should be made from the same fabric as the window treatment to tie the entire area together. Large pillows make the alcove even more inviting. As an alternative, install a low set of curving bookcases following the lines of the bow beneath the window.

    Bistro Look

    • Cafe curtains hanging at the halfway point of the bow window provide privacy without blocking the view or natural light. This imparts a bistro look, and would be especially inviting in a kitchen or dining area. Another alternative would be to install plantation shutters on the bottom half of the window for a country-inn look.
