Interesting Facts About Flood Lights

With the vast selection of floodlights on the market today, there's no reason not to choose to install one or more on a home's exterior. Security lights serve a safety purpose by providing safe entrance into the home and garage at night. Floodlights also serve as a deterrent to criminals by making doors and windows clearly visible. Strategically placed floodlights focus attention on exterior features of the home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Typically security lights operate the same as regular lighting. Newer models of floodlights offer motion detection features. Whenever a person or object passes within the range of the floodlight's "eye," or photo sensor cell, the light switches on a higher beam. This can make a would-be criminal think he's in trouble and cause him to flee.

    Styles

    • Security lights come in a wide range of styles to match any other lighting on the home's exterior. Black, white and green fixtures are common in most lighting stores. Some lights are available in metallic finishes such as stainless steel and copper. The light bulbs may be traditional incandescent bulbs, or there are a number of LED lighting options available to help reduce the cost of operating security lights. Other bulb options include quartz halogen and compact fluorescent bulbs.

    Types

    • Floodlights come in three basic types. The hard-wired variety needs an electrician or someone with electrical skills to wire them into the house's electrical system. Low-voltage floodlights plug into existing outlets. Solar security lights depend on sunshine to power them. They may not be suitable for geographical areas that don't get a lot of sunshine during some seasons of the year. Regardless of the type, the lighting fixture should have a manual override switch that allows its use as a regular light fixture.

    Features

    • Newer floodlights come with a range of features. Many new models have motion sensor technology incorporated in the fixture. Most light fixtures have light-detection capabilities that turn them on at dusk and off at dawn. There are models available that allow you to specify when the light activates the fixture daily. These lights are programmable so the on/off times can change with the seasons.

    Placement

    • Floodlights need to be set as high on the wall as possible to get the maximum benefit from the lights. This also makes them difficult to disable without a ladder. The lights should focus on the entranceways into the home and garage. This includes the sidewalks around the home as well. Lights shouldn't project into the neighbor's yard or home.
