Nursing students at Vanderbilt can train at the university's medical center.

Located in Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt University offers degrees for undergraduate and graduate students. The university also offers medical and nursing degrees through the Vanderbilt School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Both the nursing and medical schools operate as part of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which offers medical services to patients throughout Tennessee. Nursing students at Vanderbilt can apply for one of 25 scholarships offered by Vanderbilt's School of Nursing.

  1. Function

    • The cost of earning a degree at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing can extract large costs from a nursing student. According to the Vanderbilt School of Nursing, as of 2010, tuition ran $1,051 per semester hour, and a student in the master of nursing program could expect to pay nearly $73,000 a year in total costs. Because of the high costs of earning a nursing degree at Vanderbilt, the school offers a number of scholarships that can help nursing students cover costs. Many of Vanderbilt's nursing scholarships also honor and memorialize former students and faculty, such as the La Juan Furgason Scholarship Fund that honors La Juan Furgason, a 1967 graduate of the School of Nursing.

    Types

    • Two types of scholarships come directly from Vanderbilt's School of Nursing: full and partial scholarships. The four full scholarships the school grants provide full tuition money to incoming and current nursing students. Winners are determined based more on academic merit rather than financial need, such as with the Harold Stirling Vanderbilt Scholarship. The additional 21 partial scholarships provide varying amounts of tuition assistance. Awards are given out based on financial need or academic merit -- sometimes both. Such is the case with the Lillian Cary Scholarship.

    Eligibility

    • Each scholarship from the School of Nursing has its own eligibility requirements. Some scholarships go to a student studying a specific nursing discipline, like the Jennie Wamsley Long Memorial Scholarship for students in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. Other scholarships are meant for a certain type of student, such as the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for minority students or the Frances M. Houston Scholarship Fund for students from Cannon, Coffee, DeKalb, Rutherford, Warren and Wilson counties in Tennessee. All the scholarships require a student to be enrolled full-time to be considered for a scholarship.

    Process

    • The School of Nursing's Office of Admissions determines a student's eligibility for each scholarship and sends the applicable scholarship applications in the student's financial aid package. After receiving all the applications, the School of Nursing Scholarship Committee makes all the decisions regarding scholarship winners. Students applying for scholarships based on financial need are asked to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

    Time Frame

    • Scholarship applications are mailed to eligible students in January or February each year. Scholarship applications are due back to the Office of Admissions by March 15 for new students and in March or April for current or returning students. Award winners are announced by mid to late April for new students and late June for current students.
