As outsourcing has risen and information has become the currency of the day, more and more information-driven jobs such as website development, content writing and data entry have been created. And some moms invent their own businesses from what they do best. Mompreneurs has a list of some of the most popular jobs for moms at home.

  1. Virtual Assistant

    • Virtual assistants might work for a company doing home customer service; billing or bookkeeping; or data entry. The career website Indeed said the average salary for virtual assistants was $29,000 as of December 2010. Virtual assistant jobs can be found on sites like Flex Jobs and Virtual Assistant Jobs.

    Website Development and Design

    • Mompreneurs cites a "huge need" for people who can develop and host websites as well as update content. This job requires knowledge of HTML, the language in which web content is produced, as well as FTP, file transfer protocol, which allows clients to link one page to another or to another site. They should understand search engine optimization, factors that make a site easier for potential customers to find, and software common to website design. According to the Occupational Information Network, the median salary for a web designer in 2009 was $77,010.

    Writer

    • Many writers work from home for traditional media outlets, such as newspapers and magazines as well as providing web content for information and blogging sites. They also might be content providers working for companies through Internet site developers. Writers are more likely to make money if they have a journalism or communications background and some professional experience. Some places to look for freelance writing jobs include GT Thread, Freelance Writing Gigs and Media Bistro. (see Resources)

    Medical Transcription

    • Medical transcriptionists transcribe doctor's recorded notes about such things as patient visits, medical histories and treatment plans into documents. Transcriptionists must understand anatomy and medical terminology to ensure accurate documents. There are various training options, from online courses to certifications through community colleges with a one-year certification or a two-year associate's degree. Programs that are certified by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity are more likely to be recognized by clients (see Resources). The mean salary of a medical transcriptionist is $33,350, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010-1011 Occupational Outlook Handbook.

    E-Commerce

    • Many moms create and sell their own products. Some might be child care related, products they use or would have liked to have. Others might be crafts such as clothes, toys, soaps, candles and jewelry. Women can sell these products online on websites such as Etsy. The key to turning a hobby into a business is reexamining it from a business perspective. Have a profit-oriented approach to your time, materials and marketing.
