Every year, many people try their hand at becoming an actor.

Almost everyone has, at one time or another, briefly imagined themselves becoming a rich and famous actor or actress. But those seriously considering a career in acting can certainly increase the chances of success by knowing what it takes to become a successful actor earning enough to make a living.

  1. Self-Evaluation

    • It is important to first think about why you would want to become an actor. For many, just getting on-stage with a community theater group for self-fulfillment is enough. Others may be intent on making a career out of acting. By evaluating your individual desires, strengths and current situation you can help make the best decisions to becoming the actor they would like to become. For example, someone right out of high school wanting to act for a living may benefit most from going to college for performing arts, whereas it can be tougher for someone in their thirties who already has a degree to do so.

    Education

    • Acting is more than than a talent, it is a skill. And like any other skill, the true masters of the craft have practiced for countless hours to get where they are today. To become an actor, you must be willing to put in the time and effort to learn about different methods and styles. Whether through a traditional college or university program or a free community group, a serious actor must seek to educate himself on many different aspects of acting.

    Involvement

    • No matter what goals you may have for the future as an aspiring actor, it is imperative to stay involved in the acting community. Whether through community theater groups, on-campus musicals, work with local filmmakers or paid extra work, staying involved in the acting community helps to lead to more opportunities. Also, community involvement gives aspiring actors valuable experience and contacts in the community or industry.

    Location

    • Location can be a very big part of becoming a successful actor. Small towns may not have any acting opportunities at all, whereas any larger city will at least have some community theaters to get involved in. It is a good idea to at least get some experience before relocating, but anyone wanting a career in acting should eventually relocate to Los Angeles or New York where the majority of acting work is.

    Getting Noticed

    • Prepare a resume that includes all of your relevant acting experience. Print several head shots (large photo of your face) to include with your resume and also a brief cover letter. Send this bio out to several casting agencies in your area. Make certain to ask around to any friends or fellow actors in your area to learn of which casting companies to avoid or apply to.
