Christmas Help for Low-Income Families in Las Vegas

Christmas is the time of the year for fellowship, brotherhood and helping out those less fortunate. Las Vegas, Nevada has a large number of people living near or below the poverty line in 2010, and many of these low-income families literally have no extra money for Christmas. Fortunately, Las Vegas does have an active civic community, and there are several programs that provide assistance to low-income individuals and families over the holidays.

  1. Christmas Gifts for Children

    • There are two major programs in Las Vegas that work to provide Christmas gifts for low-income families. The Marines Toys for Tots has an large drive in Las Vegas every year. Thousands of toys of all sorts are donated by individuals and collected at local area businesses before being distributed to needy families with children. The Salvation Army also has an active chapter in Las Vegas. They operate the Holiday Angel Tree program, where individuals and businesses can adopt an angel from the Angel Tree. The Angel is a card with the name and Christmas wish list of a needy local child.

    Warm Winter Clothes

    • Both Goodwill Donation Centers and the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada accept donations of new or gently worn clothes of all sorts. Christmas is the time of the year they give away most of the warm clothes on hand. Donations are especially needed during the holiday season.

    Food Donations

    • There are several organizations that distribute foodstuffs to low-income Las Vegas families. Three Square Now Food Pantry, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission and Catholic Charities all gratefully accept food and cash donations year-round, but the need is particularly high in the holiday season as they try to provide the extras for holiday meals. The Soroptimist Club of Greater Las Vegas accepts food and cash donations to support their efforts to deliver holiday food and gift baskets to the indigent every Christmas.

    Christmas Dinner

    • Both the Las Vegas Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army (and a number of local churches) provide Christmas dinner to both low-income families and homeless individuals and families.

    Santa Cop Program

    • The Las Vegas Metro Police Department organizes a Santa Cop program every year for low-income families in Las Vegas. The program brings together a Las Vegas police officer and a child from a needy family, and the two of them shop together for Christmas presents for the child and the child's family. In 2009 more than 120 needy children and their families were served by the program.
