Tazewell County, located in southwestern Virginia in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, has one public school district. Tazewell County Public Schools offers instruction from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade in its 16 schools and vocational center. Approximately 6,800 students were enrolled in the schools in the start of the 2010-2011 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

  1. Elementary Schools

    • The Tazewell County Public Schools district has nine elementary schools: Abb's Valley-Boissevain in Boissevain; Cedar Bluff in Cedar Bluff; Dudley and Graham Intermediate School, both in Bluefield; North Tazewell and Springville, both in North Tazewell; Raven in Raven; Richlands in Richlands; and Tazewell in Tazewell.

Abb's Valley-Boissevain is the district's top-rated elementary school, having received the Governor's Award for Academic Excellence in 2008, 2009 and 2010. It also was named a Distinguished Title 1 School for Virginia for five consecutive years beginning in 2005.

    Middle Schools

    • The district has three middle schools: Tazewell in Tazewell, Graham in Bluefield and Richlands in Richlands.

At Graham, students who don't want their parents to find out about bad grades will find it doesn't do any good to toss their report cards on the way home from school. Graham parents can request to have report cards available to them on the Internet, the school's website notes.

    High Schools

    • The district has three high schools: Richlands in Richlands, Tazewell in Tazewell and Graham in Bluefield.

Tazewell High School is the oldest school in the district, having admitted its first students in 1872, with the first class graduating in 1879. At that time, school was held in the county courthouse. It's also been located where the present library is as well as the location of the current county administration building. The present school was constructed in 1954, according to a school history.

    Vocational Center

    • The Tazewell County Career & Technical Center, built in 1968, is located on the Tazewell High School grounds, but is considered a separate school. The center provides both students and adults with occupational training. Vocational offerings include automotive, computer technology, building trades, cosmetology and practical nursing. The school district says it has plans to eventually expand the vocational center's offerings to four more trades.

    Technology

    • The school district serves as its own Internet service provider. Each teacher has his own website where he can post class news as well as assignments for students who miss school due to illness or other absences. This also means that parents can compare their child's homework against the assignment to make sure it's done right.
