Walmart Good Works Scholarships
The Good Works program is part of the philanthropic arm of the Walmart Foundation. In 2010, Walmart handed out more than $9 million in scholarship money to employees and members of the local community. The Walmart Good Works program offers four scholarship programs in order to enrich the lives of the companies' employees and the community.

Walmart offers college scholarships to graduating high school seniors under the Sam Walton Community Scholarship program. The Walmart Dependent Scholarship is available to the children of Sam's Club and Walmart employees. The Walton Family Foundation Scholarship offers a more extensive scholarship for the children of employees with high test scores and financial need. The Walmart Associate Scholarship helps current employees of the company receive a college education.

The size of Walmart Good Works scholarships vary by type. The company offers $3,000 per student under the Sam Walton Community Scholarship program, while the Associate Scholarship provides variable funding depending on the cost of education in the local area and financial need of the employee. The Walmart Dependent Scholarship offers a $3,000 scholarship per student, while the Walton Family Foundation Scholarship offers a $13,000 scholarship spread out over four years.

For all scholarships except the Sam Walton Community Scholarship, applicants must work at Walmart or Sam's Club or have legal guardians who do so. All scholarships are based upon the financial need of the applicant. The Walmart Dependent Scholarship and the Sam Walton Community Scholarship requires applicants to maintain at least a 2.5 grade-point average throughout high school. The Walton Family Foundation Scholarship requires a minimum score of 22 on the ACT or 1030 on the SAT. The Walmart Associate Scholarship does not require any academic scores.

Scholarship applicants can apply for scholarships online via the Walmart corporate website. The company offers three application launch dates per year. As of November 17, 2010, the next four dates are November 1, 2010, February 1, 2011, May 1, 2011, and August 1, 2011. Employees must have worked at the company for at least six months to apply.
Time Frame

Applicants must apply for a scholarship within a month of the opening of the application process, or they must wait for the next application window. The application window closes on 5 p.m. Central Standard Time on the first of the month following the launch date. Scholarship winners will be notified within 45 days of the close of the application process.
