Grants for Historical Research
A variety of grants is available for people who want to do historical research. Many of the grants are for students studying for doctoral degrees or researchers who already hold these advanced degrees, but a few are available for other researchers. Some grants require the recipients to do their research at a specific venue, so they should be prepared to relocate for awhile. Grant awards range from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

American Historical Association
-
The American Historical Association (AHA) sponsors several grants and fellowships, often in partnership with another organization. One is the Fellowship in Aerospace History, with projects about any aspect of flight eligible for funding. Applicants for this National Aeronautics and Space Administration fellowship should have a doctoral degree in history or be close to completing it, the AHA says. A majority of the AHA grants require applicants to be members of the association, such as The Albert J. Beveridge Grant for Research in the History of the Western Hemisphere. The AHA says preference is given to doctoral-degree candidates.
Marine Corps
-
The history division of the U.S. Marine Corps provides research grants for students working on masters' and doctoral degrees. These grants are provided by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. One grant is the General Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr. Memorial Dissertation Fellowship. This grant is for students of U.S. military and navel history, with particular emphasis on the history of this country's Marine Corps. Topics can cover both peace and wartime history.

History of Nursing
-
The American Association for the History of Nursing has grants available for members who have doctoral degrees. Research done by recipients is expected to "help ensure the growth of scholarly work focused on the history of nursing," the association's website says.
State Historical Societies
-
State historical societies also offer opportunities for grants for historical research. For example, the Nebraska Historical Society offers grants for people studying some aspect of Nebraska history and archaeology. The society notes the grants are open to anyone with an interest in Nebraska history, not just scholars. Recipients are expected to spend at least one week during the grant period working at the historical society's library.
College Research Grants
-
Colleges may also have grants for students and others studying history. For example, the University of Missouri at Kansas City sponsors the James C. Olson research grants. The grants are to assist people studying the holdings of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection. The small grants are awarded based on financial need of the applicant.
