What Is the Difference Between Counter Strike Source & Counter Strike?
The popular Valve team-based online shooter Counter-Strike was updated through the remake Counter-Strike Source in 2004. Due to the popularity of the original Counter-Strike, the updated version received a great deal of attention from players. A number of changes differentiate the remake from the original shooter.
-
Engine
-
The original Counter-Strike originally surfaced as a modification of Valve's popular first-person shooter Half-Life, created by Minh Le and Jesse Cliffe using the company's earlier GoldSrc engine. Upon the creation of Valve's Source engine, used to power games such as Half-Life 2 and more recently the Left 4 Dead series, a remake of the original Counter-Strike was finished. The new engine allows for updated graphics, as well as a number of gameplay changes.
Gameplay
-
Gameplay in Counter-Strike Source is fundamentally similar to the original, focusing on team-based combat on objective focused maps. Utilizing the Source engine, however, does allow for gameplay changes in terms of the operation of physics in the world. The behavior of grenades, gunfire and other elements are modified due to the increased physics capability of the engine.
-
Modes
-
The modification-friendly nature of the Source engine allows for the inclusion of numerous additional game modes not found previously in the original Counter-Strike. Whether these modes are included with the game itself, or available through community-creation, Counter-Strike Source offers players the ability to play the core game in vastly different ways through the various modes.
System Requirements
-
The two versions of Counter-Strike each possess different system requirements, due to the engines used for gameplay. The original Counter-Strike requires a minimum 500 mhz processor, 96mb ram, 16mb video card, as well as the Windows 2000/XP operating system. For optimum performance, an 800 mhz processor, 128mb ram, and 32mb+ video card are recommended.
Counter-Strike Source has increased system requirement, due to the newer Source engine. A computer outfitted with a 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, and at least the Windows 2000/XP are required for satisfactory operation. Valve recommends a 2.4 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, and a DirectX 9 level graphics card for peak performance. Both versions of
Counter-Strike require a mouse, keyboard and Internet access.
Competitive Gaming
-
The original Counter-Strike was an extremely popular game for competitive gaming tournaments across the world. With the introduction of Counter-Strike Source, regardless of resistance from a portion of players, many competitive gaming groups adopted the newer version due to the ability for video card sponsors to use Counter-Strike Source to sell new video cards. This resulted in a fragmentation of the Counter-Strike community, resulting in the extremely popular shooter to fall from its place of prominence in competitive gaming.
