The Difference Between a Range & a Stove

Save

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, the definition of a stove is a portable or fixed apparatus that furnishes heat for warmth and cooking. A range, specifically, is a stove with spaces for cooking a number of things at the same time. When referring to kitchen appliances, the stove is typically referred to as a "kitchen stove," an effort to differentiate it from one that is solely used as a method of heat.

History

  • Historically, cooking has been accomplished over an open flame. In 1735, the first enclosed "stove" was created by a French architect. He created a structure with several fire holes covered by iron plates. In time, the design was refined by lowering pots into the fire hole to improve the heat efficiency.

Size

  • The average size of a kitchen stove is 30 inches wide and 24 inches deep. A stove typically has four burners with 9 inches between the front burner and the back burner.

A range comes in a variety of sizes, from 36 inches to 60 inches wide.

Features

  • Standard kitchen stoves come with two small burners and two large burners.

Ranges allow for more variation in appearance. Some ranges come equipped with five, six, eight or 10 burners. Griddles and grills can also be added to the range.

Benefits

  • The benefits of a kitchen stove is that it has a simple design that makes it easier to clean. If a burner or any other part needs to be replaced, it can be found at any home improvement store that sells appliances.

Ranges are beneficial if you cook professionally or just want to have a gourmet-style kitchen in your home. Since a range is available in a variety of sizes and options, you can customize it according to your individual needs in the kitchen.

Styles

  • Although they may differ in sizes and options, kitchen stoves and ranges are both available in either gas or electric. Both are available as a "drop-in", which is separate from the oven and as a free standing "slide-in", which is equipped with the oven.
