Interior designers have many choices for their careers. They can work in a residential or commercial setting. Residential interior designers work with home furnishings, remodeling, new construction and decorating. A commercial interior designer may work in hospitality, medical, office design or business construction. Other job options include working in sales for companies that sell furniture and design products.

Residential interior designers plan, design and furnish homes. They are often involved in new construction from the very beginning of architectural planning and design to selecting the furnishings and final decorating details. Their focus is on everything that goes into a home. Projects may range from a simple paint selection to supervising every detail that is chosen for a house, such as room layouts, furniture, window treatments, accessory selection and placement.
Commercial Interior Designer

Commercial interior designers my work on the design of office buildings, manufacturing plants, shopping centers, hotels and other projects. They design many types of interior space, and select office furniture, flooring, and artwork for businesses. The projects can range from a simple office to a whole corporate building design.

Interior Decorator

The interior decorator's focus is on choosing fabric selections, color palettes, furniture, and accessories. They supervise other contractors and the final placement of all furnishings. They mainly work in a residential home or office that is already built. The decorator can also work in a retail store arranging merchandise on the floor.
Furniture Sales

Many large furniture companies hire interior designers to sell their furniture. The designers offer customers knowledge about the products and advice on choices such as fabric selections. They help customers select the style, size and fabric for sofas and case goods. While much of their time is spent in the retail store selling to customers, some stores send the interior designers to homes to help design and decorate overall home interiors.

An Interior designer can choose to become a sales rep for a national furniture company, carpet or tile manufacturer, accessory manufacturer or fabric company. These sales representatives make calls on interior design studios and stores to promote their products, keep store catalogs and displays up to date, and educate designers about their products.
Remodeling Specialist

The remodeling specialist designs and coordinates the remodeling project of a home or business. They design the plan for the remodeling project, and select products such as plumbing fixtures, tile, cabinet design, paint color, flooring and lighting. The interior designer works closely with the client in designing and selecting products. They help coordinate the remodeling team to implement the design plan.
Home Staging

The home staging interior designer focuses on preparing a home for sale. The designer arranges the furniture, removes the clutter, and selects colors and other items to make a home look more valuable. Home stagers work with realtors and home sellers.
