There are ways for women with children to make money from home.

Many mothers of young children who work outside the home spend a substantial portion of their income on child care. Others have their children cared for by family members. A third option is to work out a method to make money from home, where you can care for the children at the same time. This isn't the most efficient way to get work done but can be more profitable than a salary with the costs of commuting and child care subtracted.

  1. Kinds of Work

    • The work opportunities for stay-at-home moms are broad and varied. Some mothers of young children make money by opening a day care and taking in other people's children as well. This work is obviously compatible with having young children. Many types of online work, including writing, editing and online selling are compatible with caring for children. Some women become entrepreneurs and start their own businesses while staying at home with their children. These businesses could include wholesaling various commodities, becoming a an accountant or consultant or making money through a craft such as knitting or beekeeping.

    Benefits

    • The benefits of developing an income while staying at home with your children are financial, personal and emotional. None of your income will be going out for child care or for long commutes. What used to be commuting time will now be time devoted to doing other things. Most important, you will be with your children all day and have the opportunity to nurture them directly rather than paying someone else to do it.

    Challenges

    • Many mothers of young children find it oppressive to be at home all day. Particularly if they are single mothers, they may find themselves longing for a conversation with another adult. For highly social women, home-based work may become a challenge. This can be alleviated to some extent by involving other people in their work so that, even if they are at home, they are not necessarily alone.

    Personalities

    • Mothers who are more likely to thrive as stay-at-home moms who make money while caring for their children include women who are independently minded, determined to succeed and comfortable being alone or only in the company of their children. A successful home worker should also have a certain amount of self-discipline so that she doesn't end up playing with the baby or reading all day.

    Benefits for Children

    • The benefits to children of having their mother with them all day may be the deciding factor for many women. Even the best of day-care centers or babysitters can't replace a young child's or an infant's mother. In addition to having their mother there when they need her, children will also observe her working at home and absorb a lesson about self-sufficiency and self-discipline.
