Medical social workers help people who are coping with serious diseases or illnesses. As compassionate professionals, medical social workers not only provide clients with emotional support, they help them find the programs and services they need. Medical social workers are also known as medical and public health social workers, according to O*Net, a website sponsored by the Department of Labor.

  1. National Salary

    • The mean hourly wage for medical and public health social workers was $23.24 and the mean annual wage, or average annual salary, was $48,340, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Median annual wages for medical and public health social workers ranged from approximately $28,600 to $71,190. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,600 and the top 10 percent earned more than $71,190.

    Experience

    • The PayScale website lists the annual salary of medical and public health social workers according to their years of experience. In October 2010, medical and public health social workers with less than one year of experience earned $26,451 to $44,406; one to four years, $33,568 to $47,794; five to nine years, $35,860 to $53,095; 10 to 19 years, $39,681 to $57,950; and 20 years or more, $42,697 to $60,898.

    High Employment

    • General medical and surgical hospitals employed the largest number of medical and public health social workers with an average annual salary of $53,730, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other industries that employed large numbers were: individual and family services, $39,980; home health care services, $49,870; nursing care facilities, $43,630; and local governments, $46,390.

    Top-Paying Industries

    • The professional and commercial equipment and supplies merchant wholesalers industry paid the highest average annual salary above all other industries to medical and public health social workers, with $61,650, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other industries that offered high pay were: elementary and secondary schools, $56,050; specialty hospitals, $55,280; insurance carriers, $54,960; and general medical and surgical hospitals, $53,730.

    Top-Paying Locations

    • District of Columbia employers paid the highest average annual salary above all other locations to medical and public health social workers, with $66,270, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other places that offered high pay were: Nevada, $63,720; Connecticut, $61,290; Maryland, $58,590; and California, $57,890.
