    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reveals that the mean hourly wage for manicurists and pedicurists was $10.65 and the mean annual wage was $22,150 in May 2009.

    High Employment

    • The personal-care services industry employed the most manicurists and pedicurists, with an annual mean annual wage of $21,990, according to the BLS in May 2009. Other industries that employed high numbers of manicurists and pedicurists were: amusement, gambling and recreational industries, $27,250; the traveler accommodation industry, $27,500; the department stores industry, $20,860; and the health and personal-care stores industry, $20,610.

    Top Paying States

    • Manicurists and pedicurists received the highest pay in Vermont, with an annual mean wage of $33,680, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other states or areas that offered high pay were as follows: Oregon, $32,090; Utah, $29,780; the District of Columbia, $29,390; and North Dakota, $28,650.

    Earning Factors

    • Entry-level workers, as with most careers, usually have low earnings, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those with more experience earn significantly more. Factors that can impact earnings are the salon's size, its location and the employee's experience level. For many workers, the key to success is in maintaining regular clients.

    Benefits

    • Some salons offer benefits, such as medical and paid vacation. Nail technicians who are part-time or self-employed typically do not have benefits. According to the PayScale website, 19 percent of nail technicians received medical, 12 percent received dental and nine percent had vision benefits in October 2010. About 81 percent did not have health benefits.
