Automotive technicians keep cars in top shape.

Automotive technicians or car mechanics maintain and repair cars and light trucks. Employers prefer those who have passed a formal training program beyond secondary schools. Many employers also send their technicians to company-specific training schools. The highest-paid techs can make nearly three times what the lowest-paid ones earn.

  1. Medians

    • The median compensation of automotive technicians is $17.03 hourly or $35,420 yearly. The bottom 10 percent make $9.54 or $19,840, and the upper 10 percent receive $28.81 or $59,920. This information is as of May 2009 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    • Workplace classification can affect compensation, with the highest salaries located in aerospace manufacturing, with salaries at $31.87 or $66,290; couriers and express delivery, with salaries at $29.73 or $61,840; natural gas distribution, with salaries at $28.34 or $58,940; scientific research and development, with salaries at $27.63 or $57,480; and wired telecommunications, with salaries at $26.79 or $55,720.

    States

    • The state in which the job is performed dictates rates. This highest-paid automotive technicians are in Alaska, in which rates are $23.74 or $49,370; District of Columbia, in which rates are $21.56 or $44,850; Connecticut, in which rates are $20.53 or $42,700; Maryland, in which rates are $20.52 or $42,680; and Massachusetts, in which rates are $20.48 or $42,600.

    Cities

    • Cities of employment can also determine salaries. The ones containing the best-salaried workers are Texarkana, Texas, with wages of $26.34 or $54,790; Ann Arbor, Michigan, with wages of $25.65 or $53,340; Danbury, Connecticut, with wages of $24.89 or $51,770; Anchorage, Alaska, with wages of $24.58 or $51,130; and San Jose, California, with wages of $24.31 or $50,570.

    Employment Levels

    • Areas with the highest employment levels do not always pay the best compensation. For example, the two workplaces with the greatest employment of automotive techs are automotive repair and maintenance, in which rates are $16.74 or $34,820; and automobile dealers. None of these are top payers. As for states with the highest concentrations of workers, the top two are Vermont, in which pay runs $16.64 or $34,620; and Maine, in which pay runs $16.55 or $34,420. Neither of these pay the best salaries. The cities with the greatest concentration of work are Hinesville, Georgia, an undistinguished source of salaries with compensation at $23.58 or $49,060. However, second-ranked Texarkana, Texas is also the highest-paying city
