Florida Life Insurance License Preparation
All life insurance agents in the state of Florida must take a state licensing exam before engaging in insurance transactions. The Florida Department of Financial Services outlines the necessary steps each life insurance candidate must follow in order to obtain a license. Once you obtain your life insurance license, you will be able to purchase and sell insurance to clients on behalf of an insurance company and legally receive commissions on the sale.

Age and Residency Requirements

Before you can become a life insurance agent in the state of Florida, you must be at least 18 years old and live in the state of Florida. You must also be a U.S. citizen or a legal alien.
Types of Life Insurance Licenses

Florida offers four different types of life insurance licenses: Credit Life or Disability; Life and Variable Annuity; Temporary Life and Variable Annuity; and Life, Health and Variable Annuity. Take time to decide which of these licenses best suits your interests.

Florida Pre-Licensing Education Requirements

Florida requires its life agents to take 40 hours of approved insurance classes plus three hours of life and annuity classes before taking the state exam. The classes must be taken from state-approved education providers.
The Florida Department of Financial Services has a database of all of its state-approved insurance education providers. Because some education providers offer courses in more than one specialty, make sure to double-check that you have selected the classes for your specialty.
Life Insurance Application

The application for becoming a licensed life insurance agent is available on the Florida Department of Financial Services website. In order to access the application, you must use the Internet Explorer version 5 or higher. If you use Firefox or another Web browser, you will not be able to view and download the application.
Fingerprint Requirement

Insurance agents are subject to a state background check and must be fingerprinted. Florida uses a company called Life Span to administer the fingerprinting process. There are Life Scan offices scattered throughout the state of Florida. The fee for fingerprinting is $58.25. The Florida Department of Financial Services has a listing of all of the Life Scan locations.
State Exam

All of the Florida state insurance exams are administered through a company called Pearson Vue (PearsonVue.com). Visit its website, register and schedule the state exam. While you're on the Pearson Vue site, download thefree and informative Candidate Handbook, which offers a step-by-step checklist on how to obtain your life insurance license. Additionally, download the content outlines. The Content Outline brochure provides a listing of the types of questions you'll see when you take your life insurance exam.
