AARP Membership
-
To take advantage of the discounts and benefits offered by the AARP Auto Insurance Program, you must be a member of the organization. The only requirements for becoming an AARP member are that you are 50 years or older, you sign up and pay dues. As of 2010, the organization had three dues rates depending on how long you sign up for. A one year membership costs $16 per year. A three year membership costs $14.33 per year. Finally, a five year membership costs $12.60 per year. Membership dues include free membership for your spouse.
Lifetime Renewability
-
One of the many benefits of AARP automobile insurance is a provision for lifetime renewability. If the policy holder meets several requirements, then the insurance company cannot refuse renewal. There are four requirements. First, the policy must be in place for 60 days. Second, the driver must remain physically and mentally capable of driving of car. Third, the driver must not get convicted for any alcohol-related driving offenses. Fourth, the driver must not have made any misrepresentations in obtaining a policy. Finally, the driver must pay premiums on time.

Protection
-
AARP automobile insurance provides policy holders with several levels of protection. It offers new car replacement for new cars totaled within 15 months or 15,000 miles after purchasing the new car. In that case, the insurance company will pay for a new car based on what you paid without calculating depreciation. In addition, AARP automobile insurance rates stay fixed for 12 month periods and do not increase every six months. AARP automobile insurance keeps a hotline 24 hours a day, seven days a week for claim service and customer service.
Flexibility
-
AARP automobile insurance plans can provide flexibility with plans. In most states, the policy may offer first accident forgiveness, which waives a premium increase after a policy holder gets into an accident, if the person was ticket and accident free for the prior five years. In addition, for most states, after three years of AARP coverage, the insurance company will reduce your deductible $150 if you go five years accident and ticket free. They will reduce deductibles another $50 each year you go accident and ticket free until the deductible hits $0.
Residency
-
Residency may affect whether you meet the requirements for AARP auto insurance or what benefits are available to you. The AARP Automobile Insurance Program is not available to residents of Massachusetts. In addition, residents of Hawaii, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina and South Carolina cannot take advantage of the lifetime renewal benefits. The insurance policy does not waive premium increases for drivers who were ticket free and accident free for five years prior to an accident for Delaware residents like it does in other states. Finally, the lowest Pennsylvania residents' deductible can be reduced is to $100.
