Nioxin Myths

Nioxin Myths thumbnail

Choosing a cleaning and styling product line that may decrease hair loss and stimulate hair growth is difficult, especially when there are so many to choose from. Product reviews, testimonials and manufactures' claims often provide inadequate and/or false information about these products. Hair care product myths develop and spread rapidly and Nioxin, as with all products, has its fair share. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Causes of Hair Loss

    • Hair clippings

Many causes may contribute to hair loss, from genetic predisposition and acne to seborrhea and alopecia areata. Hair loss is considered excessive when 50 or more strands are lost on a daily basis and not replaced.

For women, their hair loss problem may be directly related to hormonal changes. In men it seems that the more body hair they have, the more prone they are to baldness. Their risks for hair loss range from 50-90 percent, depending on the amount and distribution of hair on their bodies.

Nioxin's line of hair care consists of eight different systems, each of them formulated to target specific types of hair and hair that has been chemically treated. These systems are made up of three products: a cleanser, conditioner and daily scalp treatment with SPF 15. They also offer a wide range of styling products.
These products are designed to remove harmful chemicals and residue, safeguard the skin from becoming too dry and protect the scalp from UVA and UVB rays. Each of Nioxin's system provides vitamins, proteins and amino acids directly to the scalp.

    Myths

The most prevalent myths about Nioxin are that its usage makes hair fall out; that it causes dermatosis or skin diseases where there were none before; is dangerous when used in combination with other hair treatments drugs and topical creams and solutions; and that it is unsafe for use during chemotherapy or other medical treatments.

The products are designed with skin sensitivity and scalp irritation in mind. The ingredients are considered hypoallergenic. If a person is sensitive to the ingredients, they may experience redness or skin irritation and should discontinue the use of these products. The irritation is usually found on users' hands and exposed skin around the scalp line. This is easily remedied by washing the affected areas with soap and water.

The manufacturer suggests consulting with a physician prior to using the products. Nioxin may be used during chemotherapy and in conjunction with most other creams, drugs, medical treatments and hair restorers. Usage will not give a person a skin disease or make their hair fall out.

Nioxin is not a cure for any of the causes that contribute to hair loss. It won't eliminate genetic predispositions or scalp diseases. It will not reverse hair loss. It can't alter a person's genes, balance hormones or relieve stress. It is not a panacea. It is not snake oil nor a magic elixir guaranteed to stop the aging process.

What Nioxin, despite all the myths, does is clean and condition a user's scalp and hair shafts and protect them from sun damage. Hair does appear to be fuller, because the product adds moisture to the hair through the cuticle and its ingredients are absorbed directly into the scalp, which stimulates hair growth.
