About Front Door Dome Awnings

Adding a dome awning over a front door is an excellent way to add aesthetic to your home or office and provide a little extra coverage when trying to get in out of the rain. Dome awnings are affordable and can easily be customized to match your home or office building. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What is it?

    • A dome awning is a dome-shaped exterior device that is often used to provide protection from sun or inclement weather. Awnings are typically positioned over windows or exterior doors, and may be constructed of metal with a heavy-duty, weather resistant fabric stretched over the frame in a dome shape. Typically, the fabric or canvas covers can be easily changed to fit the look of the exterior of the home or office.

    History of the Awning

    • The use of awnings can be traced to the early 19th century, when sheets of metal were simply angled over an open window to keep out the sun or rain. Since this was before air conditioning, the awning helped to allow a crosscurrent of air to flow through the home.

Awnings soon became both decorative and functional. The first versions of the awning soon changed into ornamental structures that added an element of visual interest to the exterior of the home. The metal could be painted easily, so tailoring the awnings to accentuate the home caught on quickly.

    Types of Dome Awnings

    • There are several types of dome awnings from which to choose when considering one for your home or office, including the bubble dome, cafe dome as seen on many restaurant and cafe exteriors, symmetrical dome for wide balconies, and the tall dome awning for long vertical windows. Each of these shield doors or windows from sunlight and the elements in varying degrees.

Where To Purchase a Dome Awning

    • Dome awnings can be purchased from a number of places, including from online stores, local awning retailers, and even home improvement stores and other retail outlets such as Kmart, Walmart and Target.

    Installing a Dome Awning

    • You can install a dome awning yourself. If you purchase one from a retail store instead of a local awning specialty retailer, you will likely have to install the awning on your own. Most come with instructions on how to do so, and are relatively easy to install. If you purchase your awning from a local specialty awning retailer, they will likely have installation services included with the purchase.
