Semi-Formal Dress Code Etiquette
Semi-formal is a very popular and often-requested dress code for many occasions, from a cocktail party to a holiday banquet. Because semi-formal dress is neither entirely casual nor formal, picking the right ensemble can sometimes be a challenge. However, with the right attire, the semi-formal look will evoke traditional class and style for that special event.

Women's Clothing
-
A short cocktail dress is the preferred outfit for a semi-formal event. Silk, chiffon and satin are popular dress fabrics. A dressy top, cashmere sweater or lace camisole may be worn with a full ball skirt, but this is not as traditional. Modest hats are acceptable at weddings, and more elaborate hats are customary at outdoor horse-racing events.
Men's Clothing
-
Men should wear a gray or black suit and tie with a stiff-collared dress shirt. If the event allows a date, the man may match his tie to the woman's dress if he pleases. For a daytime event, lighter colored suits and bold-colored ties are acceptable.
-
Women's Footwear
-
Dress pumps or a similar pair of quality heels are the standard footwear choice. Dress sandals are also acceptable. Traditional footwear colors are black, brown, gray or white, but metallics are also popular and can be coordinated with practically any dress color.
Men's Footwear
-
A pair of black lace-up dress shoes should be worn. Non-patent leather shoes are worn during the day, and patent leather is acceptable for the nighttime.
Accessories
-
For women, jewelry should be kept simple, high-quality and tasteful. Hosiery is recommended, especially during fall and winter months. A small, coordinating handbag or clutch can be carried if needed. Men can wear suspenders if necessary to keep pants in their place, but they should be kept covered by the suit jacket.
What To Avoid
-
Avoid brightly colored suits, cocktail dresses that are too short, and gowns that are long and elaborate (so as not to be dressed too formally).
