Bar managers have a lot to consider when running a successful establishment. Securing the proper training will help you and your staff operate a profitable bar that is in compliance of any and all regulations.

State and Local Laws

  • Bar managers must familiarize themselves with state and local laws as they pertain to serving alcohol. These laws will vary by state and even county and may be in addition to federal regulations. For instance, some local areas may only allow for the sale of alcohol during particular hours or may require that all bartenders are licensed through the state. As an aspiring bar manager, it is extremely important for you to become knowledgeable about your state and local laws in order to ensure your bar's compliance.

Bartending School

  • There are a plethora of bartending schools throughout the country that offer prospective bartenders and bar managers the knowledge necessary to run a successful establishment. These schools will offer courses in customer service, making different types of alcoholic beverages, and more. Some states may require that a bar manager and his staff have completed a bartending school program before they can legally operate an establishment. In addition, some states may require that the program is licensed through the state in which the bartender or manager seeks licensure.

Training to Manage a Bar

  • As an aspiring bar manager, there is additional training that you may be required to receive in order to run a bar. This enhanced training will not only help you tend bar, but will provide you the knowledge to successfully run a bar establishment, manage staff and understand compliance regulations. Bartending programs that focus on bar management may include courses in point-of-sale training, loss prevention, staff scheduling, barback education and customer service.

Continued Training

  • As a bar manager you can continually expand your management skills through additional training. For instance, familiarizing yourself with the latest office software can help you create reports and spreadsheets for inventory and track which items bring in the most revenue. You can also learn how to leverage innovative sustainability best practices that can help the environment and improve your bar's bottom line.
