A long stay visa is required for all persons wishing to stay in France for longer than three months.

A long stay visa refers to a French visitor's visa that is longer than the Schengen visa of three months. A visa application is required before entering France and it must be filed with the consulate or consulate centers. There are several requirements that must be fulfilled before the visitor can enter France with a long stay visa. They must fill out the application, submit passport photos, pay the application fees, show proof of a valid passport, and proof of residency within the United States. Also, being granted a visa does not guarantee that you can stay in the country for the duration of the visa. The visa holder must follow certain rules, regulations and abide by the visa restrictions.

  1. Application

    • The application must be filed within the visa applicant's country of residence. France has restricted all applications filed in France. If the long stay visa application is submitted in France it will be denied.

    Working in France

    • If a person intends on working in a Long Stay visa, they must apply with the Departmental Directorate of Labor, Employment and Vocational Training (DDTEFP) with a work contract approved by the DDTEFP. This must be done before leaving for France so Immigration can process the visa application as a long term visa that will allow the visa applicant to work while in France.

    Crime

    • Visitors who enter France for on any visa are allowed to say with the understanding that any crime can be punishable by deportation. Be sure to abide by all French laws while in France on a visa this includes traveling on any highway while intoxicated (even on foot), allowing a minor to get drunk, and the use of any drugs. These are the most common violations that tourists make.

Intending to Stay Longer Past the Expiration Date

    • The long stay visa allows the visa holder to leave France and return multiple times. If at any point of time the immigration officer at the French point of entry feels that the visa holder intends to say longer than the expiration date of the visa, then the visa holder can be denied entry to return to France.

    Non-Immigrant Visa

    • This visa is a non-immigrant visa. In order to live in France on a residency visa, or indefinitely you must have an immigrant visa. This means that you will not be able to live indefinitely in France on this visa alone. After you arrive in France if you wish to immigrate you must apply with the French immigration. This process can take up to 10 years to complete.
