The job of a fashion design coordinator is to bridge the gap from runway to consumer, showing customers what to wear and how to accessorize through in-store merchandising. Fashion design coordinators usually work for apparel manufacturers, designers or retail stores. Their salaries vary, depending on their experience level and geographic location.
Fashion design coordinators prepare clothing and accessories for models on runways and for photo shoots. They ensure that the fashions and promotions remain uniform throughout all channels -- from manufacturer to store level. These design coordinators also work with marketing managers to determine the target audiences for styles -- ages and income level, for example -- then create marketing and promotional plans to reach these consumers. Coordinating the delivery of merchandise through fabric mills and suppliers is another key responsibility of the fashion design coordinator.
A fashion design coordinator in manufacturing or wholesale industries usually works typical weekday hours. Those in the retail industry may work evenings and weekends. Because fashion design is highly deadline-driven, the work can become stressful, and many fashion design coordinators work overtime. Some are required to travel and spend time away from home.
Education and Qualifications
Fashion design coordinators typically have at least an associate degree in fashion design or fashion merchandising. Most need bachelor's degrees in either major to advance to higher-level coordinator or director jobs. Fashion design coordinators usually train on the job with experienced coordinators or designers. The training period varies by employer. Other important qualifications for the job are attention to detail, artistic ability, physical stamina and creativity. They also must have strong communication, computer and customer service skills.
The average salary for a fashion design coordinator was $51,000 a year as of 2014, according to Simply Hired. Average salaries vary considerably by state. Fashion design coordinators earned the highest salary of $81,000 a year in Washington, D.C., and the second highest salary of $60,000 a year in the state of New York. Those in Mississippi and South Dakota made the least, at $40,000 a year in each state.
The BLS doesn't forecast jobs for fashion design coordinators. It estimates a 3 percent decline in jobs for fashion designers from 2012 to 2022 -- compared to the average 11 percent increase for all occupations. Increases in the number of apparel pieces produced internationally are expected to decrease jobs for fashion designers in the U.S. apparel manufacturing industry by 51 percent. Because many fashion design coordinators work for or with fashion designers, they may experience similar decreases in job opportunities.
