The Job Description for a 3D Graphic Design Animator
A 3D graphic design animator is an artist that manipulates color, texture, light, sound and depth to create an imagined world of characters, landscapes and objects for mediums such as video games and 3D movies. The 3D animator of today uses their artistic & storytelling talent along with state-of-the-art software tools to create fictional story lines. 3D animators are also finding use for their talents in medical illustration creating images for diagnostics and research.

3D graphic design animators can be self taught however most study at universities or schools offering two- to four-year associate and bachelor's degrees in animation, computer design and technical drawing. Most companies looking for 3D artists today now require such a degree.
Technical Skills

With the advancements in computer generated imagery (CGI) 3D animators need to be familiar with the latest software programs for graphic design and technical knowledge of animation software tools such as Flash, 3ds Max & Maya. Also, useful is a working knowledge of computer operating systems, math, physics and anatomy.

Creativity

Knowing how to use these technical skills is useful but ultimately the 3D animator must eventually rely on their creative capabilities. 3D animators use their artistic strengths for every step in the process whether that is working collaboratively on storyline & storyboards or on final CGI scene touch ups.
Story Telling

A 3D graphic animator although not an actor needs to understand the story telling element in order to convincingly create believable characters. They should have a strong understanding of pacing, timing, character development and be able create characters that can show a wide range of emotions.
Duties

During the course of a 3D animators day or work on a project their duties include designing characters, backgrounds, sets and environments. They also create models & storyboards, work on movements and work to match soundtracks and script requirements. Animators use computer software tools, work with a team of other animators and may be required to meet with clients to flesh out characters or pitch ideas.

There are many art institutes, universities and design schools offering 3D graphic design animation programs including on line and distant learning schools. In choosing a school a potential student should consider location, reputation and the technology courses that each school offers. If a student already knows with avenue of work they wish to pursue such as work within the gaming industry or movie industry they would be advised to look for institutions that offer courses dedicated to this line of work.
