Example of a Job Description for a Plumber's Helper
A plumber's helper assists a plumber by performing duties that require a lesser degree of skill than those possessed by an experienced plumber. Some of the duties commonly performed by a plumber's helper include using, supplying or holding materials or tools for the plumber, and cleaning the work area and equipment as needed.
-
Function
-
Plumber's helpers perform the duties assigned to them by an experienced plumber, and must be under direct supervision at all times. Some plumber's helper positions require experience working with plumbing; this can sometimes be gained through an apprenticeship with a plumber.
Features
-
Some of the features which characterize a plumber's helper include an individual who can take and follow direction, a high degree of physical dexterity, and problem-solving ability. An average to high level of physical strength is also required, as the nature of the job is one demanding physical labor and the ability to lift, carry heavy tool boxes, and manipulate tools and equipment.
-
Considerations
-
When considering a position as a plumber's helper, attention should be given to some of the environmental requirements and hazards of the job, including working in extreme temperature conditions (both hot and cold); climbing ladders and scaffolds; moving heavy valves, piping and fixtures; working in close spaces; using torches; working in the vicinity of biological hazards such as the bacteria and viruses contained in waste products.
Types
-
Some of the types of skills a plumber's helper will typically learn while on the job include performing different types of soldering, laying out and fitting piping for welding, operating specialized equipment such as jackhammers and rotohammers, and the ability to install various types of plumbing fixtures and trims. Plumber's helpers are also asked to excavate and grade ditches, and help lay out and join pipe for city water and sewer services.
Benefits
-
By gaining experience as a plumber's helper, an individual will usually be able to move up into positions requiring more knowledge and expertise, such as a plumbing mechanic. After several years of running an efficient plumbing crew as a plumbing mechanic, many are ready to take the "Master Plumbers" licensing test and start their own plumbing business.
