Understanding the cause, possible prevention techniques and ways to strengthen and protect delicate nails can help women to manage their fingernails correctly during their pregnancy.

Nail Growth

Women who are pregnant may notice their nails grow faster, are stronger and grow longer in length throughout the duration of their pregnancy. Alternatively, some pregnant women experience brittle nails that become softer, peel and break or split easily. Any change in nail growth during pregnancy is due to the fluctuation in hormones, intake of prenatal vitamins and general changes in eating habits, according to Pregnancy Lounge and Baby Center.

Women may experience changes in nail growth periodically throughout their pregnancy, but changes should subside after delivery. Fingernails should return to their pre-pregnancy health approximately three to six months after delivery, if the postpartum mother is eating a well-balanced diet and receiving all essential nutrients, according to Baby Center. Toenails may take between 9 to 12 months after delivery to return to their normal growth pattern and health.

Although pregnant women should take a prenatal vitamin supplement each day to ensure their baby is receiving adequate nutrients, a daily vitamin will help to strengthen the fingernails and increase nail growth. Women who are pregnant and suffering from weak nails should also eat a healthy diet that contains sufficient amounts of protein. Eating a handful of cashews or almonds each day can provide the added protein needed to increase nail strength and growth, according to Pregnancy Lounge.

Women should maintain their nails regularly throughout their pregnancy, according to Pregnancy Lounge. Fingernails that are soft and break frequently should be trimmed and kept short. Cut nails straight across and follow by rounding the tip slightly for maximum strength. Avoid the use of nail polish and polish removers that can damage and weaken the nail. Also, soaking the nails in olive oil can help to moisturize brittle nails. Contact a doctor if swelling or pain accompanies any nail changes.
Protection

Pregnant women can protect their nails by wearing rubber gloves while using cleaning products, washing dishes or gardening. Also, hand cream can help to keep fingernails healthy, less brittle and less susceptible to breakage, according to Baby Center. Use natural oils to moisturize the cuticles, such as emu or olive oil, instead of chemical-based cuticle creams. Do not cut, trim or remove the nail cuticles since doing so can lead to infection, according to Pregnancy Lounge.
