Carnosine & Hair Growth

Carnosine & Hair Growth thumbnail
Carnosine may help reverse signs of aging, including hair thinning or hair loss.

As people age, cells start to act differently. Take hair, for example. As skin cells and hair follicles start to change, so does hair texture, color and thickness. L-carnosine is an amino acid and antioxidant believed to help slow down the aging process.

  1. How It Works

    • L-carnosine is believed to reduce the negative impact of advanced glycation end products, also known as AGEs. AGEs are natural byproducts of the breakdown of protein by sugar.

    Benefits

    • L-carnosine is believed to help protect against the damage caused by AGEs and prevent the conversion of fats, or lipids, into peroxides. It's also thought to help remove toxins from the body.

    Sources

    • Meat is a primary source of L-carnosine. It can also be acquired through taking L-carnosine dietary supplements. Vegetarians who don't supplement L-carnosine may experience lower L-carnosine levels, which may negatively impact hair growth.

    Decreased Levels of L-Carnosine

    • The natural levels of L-carnosine decrease as we get older. As a result, cells lose the ability to fully rejuvenate. Hair growth requires healthy hair follicles. L-carnosine may help promote healthy skin and hair follicles, resulting in increased or sustained hair growth.

    Warning

    • Much of the research conducted on L-carnosine is limited to lab cultures, and may not prove effectiveness for hair growth.
