What Is an SR22 Filing?
There are a number of reasons why you might have your driver's license revoked, including driving while intoxicated, having an uninsured accident or having too many parking citations. To get your license reinstated, you must prove that you have the minimum amount of liability coverage that is required in your state. Once insurance is obtained, the insurance company will issue to the department of motor vehicles (DMV) a form SR22 certifying that you have your state's minimum liability automobile coverage.

Length of Time
-
How long you will be under the watchful eye of the DMV depends on the severity of your infraction. The average is about three years, but since most states have strengthened the rules regarding driving while under the influence of alcohol, that time has been expanded for that infraction. This means that if you cancel your automobile liability policy, the insurance company is required to inform the DMV of that by filing an SR26.
Needed Items
-
Obtain your driving record from the state's DMV and submit it to the insurance company that is covering you. This is required by most insurance companies because it is a way to determine how long that they will be required to forward a form SR26 to the DMV if your policy is canceled.
-
Charges
-
Before you contact an insurance company about selling you coverage, find out from the DMV that suspended you the fees necessary for the restatement of your driver's license. Some states charge you an additional fee if they have placed you in the category where an SR22 is required.
If You Move
-
Not all states have SR22 laws. However, even if you move to a state that does not have such a law, you still must fulfill the requirements of the state where you were cited. Automobile insurance companies keep up with the laws of the states where they do business and they are prepared to file SR22s which each of them.
Costs
-
Most insurance companies will issue an SR22 to any state's DMV that requires it and will charge nothing. However, there are companies that either will not file an SR22 on your behalf or charge a fee for this service. Research the cost and availability of this service before agreeing to purchase automobile liability insurance.
