Math Solving Software

Math Solving Software thumbnail
A variety of software is available to assist with solving math problems.

From kindergarten to PhD courses, there's math software to help you solve every math problem. Whether you are just starting out with counting or are differentiating equations, math software can provide you with a solution in a fraction of the time it would have taken you to solve by hand.

  1. Educational Software

    • Educational math software is made by a variety of companies, and it is aimed primarily at elementary and middle grades. These stand-alone computer applications normally go along with a specific grade (for example, first grade math) or they are aimed at a specific course (for example, basic algebra).

    Online Calculators

    • Online calculators, written in Javascript, Java or a similar programming language, can solve a wide variety of math problems. For example, online calculators can solve quadratic equations, systems of linear equations, and can find the mean, mode and median of a data set.

    Graphing Calculators

    • Graphing calculators have powerful, built-in software capable of solving complex equations. Many high school classes (especially AP classes) encourage the use of graphing calculators for coursework. The College Board allows more than 50 different graphing calculators in AP statistics and AP calculus exams. Many college classes require a TI 83 or TI 89 graphing calculator for statistics and calculus classes and with good reason. These hand-held calculators have a small screen that can enable you to graph equations, view lists and perform complex data analysis in a few keystrokes.

    Computer Algebra Systems

    • Advanced math students use a wide variety of math solving software, including computer algebra systems (CAS) like Maple and Maxima. These systems can quickly solve complex mathematical problems such as differentiation and integration.

    Distributed Computing Software

    • Regular computers don't have the processing capacity to handle an infinite number of operations, like finding the value of pi to the nth digit. Many computers can be linked together with special software that enables all of the computers to work on a calculation at once.
