The director of a children's ministry oversees special church events for children.

Every church hires various people to oversee the different aspects of the church. One of the largest areas of a church is the children's ministry, requiring a director to oversee the daily, weekly and annual functions of the ministry. This person is commonly hired as a full-time employee and may have volunteers serve under him to provide a strong team leadership structure.

  1. Requirements

    • A director of children's ministry should have a bachelor's degree in Christian education, Bible, children's ministry or elementary education. The person should have a few years of experience working with children (church-related or secular) and experience teaching Christian principles. The person needs strong organizational and interpersonal skills along with a strong Christian faith and dedication to living a life worthy of Christ.

    Job Functions

    • The director will operate in the function of gathering and training volunteers to facilitate the children's ministry. She will develop a strategy to recruit volunteers, educate and train and ensure each volunteer has a clean criminal record. The director will also function as the planer for all children's activities such as curriculum, events and special programs such as Vacation Bible School. The director will also function as an administrator working with church staff, interdepartmental communication and public relations.

    Oversight

    • The children's ministry director may oversee the nursery, young children and pre-teens through Jr. High. The director may also be responsible for the children's musical, Sunday school and the church's school if applicable. Depending on the church's needs and size, the director position may be shared with other hired staff.

    Considerations

    • The director of children's ministry should be required to participate in church staff meetings, church gatherings and a personal accountability program. He should exhibit the characters and qualities of church leadership such as integrity, love and kindness. The director should sign a document clearly stating that unethical or un-Christian conduct can lead to termination of the position.
