Considerations
-
Decide how you want to use the plates in your decorating scheme. They can be hung on a wall, displayed in stands on a table or used as holders for candles, soap or potpourri.
Plate displays don't have to be limited to kitchen or dining areas. For example, use souvenir plates featuring various cities to decorate a home library.
Color Selection
-
Create a pleasing plate display by focusing on color. One option is to group plates in different shades of the same color. Otherwise, plates with multiple colors mix well if they share at least one color to draw the display together.

Hanging Options
-
Many types of plate hangers are available. Choose one that complements your plates. For example, plates with a rustic design would be enhanced by a simple, wrought iron hanger.
Before hanging a group of plates, arrange them on the floor in several ways until you find a grouping you like. Hang several round plates in a circle to enhance their shape. Hang plates near an arched doorway in an arch pattern to mimic the doorway's shape.
Table Displays
-
Use plate holders for table displays, placing smaller plates in front so they aren't hidden by larger ones. Be sure not to overcrowd a table with plates, which would detract from their pattern and shape.
Since table displays can easily be knocked over, they are best suited for decorating areas of the home that don't get a lot of traffic.
Benefits
-
Decorating your home with plates offers an inexpensive way to create artistic displays with items you already have. Adding to a plate collection can be inexpensive as well, since thrift stores and garage sales often have decorative plates at low prices.
Plates also may have sentimental value, serving up fond memories of family members, friends or celebrations connected to them.
