Learn SQL online

Almost anyone working as a programmer or developer needs to master several types of programming languages, among them SQL (Structured Query Language), which has become an almost universal way of accessing and manipulating data stored in databases. Depending on his temperament and background, a developer can take several approaches to learning SQL online.

  1. Tools

    • Before starting any online training course or program, the aspiring SQL developer will need a database and a database development environment. For most types of SQL, these are generally free and easily obtained. Microsoft offers SQL Server Express, which includes both the database and a development and management tool. Oracle offers Oracle Express. Accessing Oracle requires a development tool, such as the free version of TOAD or SQL Developer. MySql Community Edition can be downloaded in a package that includes developer components.

    Tutorials

    • A developer can learn nearly everything there is to know about SQL without ever taking a class and even without ever opening a book. Enough tutorials and online materials can be found to provide thorough training, provided you are ready to search patiently for what you need and to persist when you get stuck on exercises. Basic SQL tutorials are available at the W3Schools website. Using online tutorials, students can train at their own pace and can learn without forking over a ton of tuition. Online tutorials are an excellent way of learning for a student who is self-motivated and determined.

    Forums

    • Forums can complement any of the other learning styles. Forums that answer beginners' questions can be especially useful, even if a student never posts a question on them. The odds are good that some other neophyte has run into pretty much every issue a beginner is likely to face and posed the same question. Once a student becomes a more advanced SQL developer, it's good form to return to the forums to answer beginners' questions as a repayment to the community for the free help.

    Online Classes

    • There is no shortage of online training that you can purchase and no end to the types of courses available. There are learn-at-your-own pace courses in which course materials are provided on secure sites and instructors provide feedback over email. There are classes that meet regularly for lectures or discussions via Skype. Many of these classes provide a certificate at the end of the course, but be aware that these certificates are often of little value to employers.

    Useful Certifications

    • A few certificates are generally recognized throughout the industry, and it may be worth a student's time to pursue them. Employers are often impressed with and sometimes require Microsoft Certification for their employees who work with Microsoft products. Microsoft exams sometimes require prerequisite exams to be passed, so the process might be prolonged and costly. Oracle has its own certification program, which is also well-recognized.
