Define Advertising Design

Advertising design affects us on a daily basis, though we may hardly notice it.

As with most fields, it is important to understand what type of work you are getting into before you decide to enter a career. You should understand the required education, what type of jobs are available, how much you can plan to make, and the overall skills you will need on the job. Nearly anyone can enter the advertising design field, with the proper training and determination.

  1. Education

    • Because advertising design is a creative field, you have a couple of options when it comes to the education you need. Most employers prefer applicants to have at least a bachelor's degree in a design or art related field and if you plan to move up in a company, a master's in a design or art related field is suggested. Though if you have a natural talent and can present a professional portfolio of design work you have done on your own, many companies will gladly add you to their team even though you do not have formal training or a degree.

    Skills Required

    • In the advertising design world you are going to need several skills. These skills include general artistic ability, communication skills, and a competitive nature. The artistic skills are needed to perform on the job, the communication skills are needed to communicate between your peers and your boss, and the competitive nature is needed because advertising is a competitive field and your company will often fight for clients with other companies, so you need to have that winning edge.

    Types of Jobs

    • In the advertising design field there are many jobs, but some of the more dominant ones include graphic design, art directors and creative directors. Graphic designers work on layouts, art directors manage small teams of designers, and creative directors manage the creative department from top to bottom.

    Daily Activities

    • If you wind up working in the advertising design field you can expect a busy work day every day you are at work. In the mornings you can expect a team meeting to discuss where current projects are; throughout the day you will work either individually or with a few members of your design team on a certain aspect of a project. You can also expect to meet up with your art director, creative director, clients or a team leader throughout the day.

    Salary

    • Salaries in the advertising design field will vary depending on the job you have. According to AllArtSchools, in 2010 the median graphic designer salary is $45,000, the median art director salary is $75,000, and the median creative director salary is $100,000.
