LED Lights & Collagen Stimulation
LED light therapy is a treatment used to stimulate the body's production of collagen, thus promoting healthier, younger looking skin. This treatment also helps to minimize scarring and assists in the faster healing of surgical incisions. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure that is completed on an out-patient basis.

Identification
-
Light therapy is a procedure that is used to improve the appearance of a person's skin by increasing the production of collagen. Light therapy is known to minimize scarring, fade age spots, and improve skin texture. It has also been helpful for those suffering from rosacea--a skin condition that causes a flushed appearance due to enlarged blood vessels. Some people find beneficial results after only a few of these cosmetic treatments.
Function
-
LEDs are light emitting diodes, and can transmit specific light frequencies as can lasers. The major difference between the two is the fact that lasers are usually damaging to skin tissue, however, LEDs are not. According to the East Bay Acne and Skin Care Clinic, the procedure involves having light emitting diodes aimed at the desired area of treatment in a uniform fashion to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Each treatment lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Features
-
According to the American Association of Dermatology. Light therapy helps to minimize fine wrinkles, and is beneficial to those suffering from skin discoloration.
Doctor Eddie Simon, a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry states that light therapy is safe for all skin types, and is an effective treatment for rosacea, age spots, fine wrinkles and scars. He states that the procedure is painless, and requires no invasive techniques.
Types
-
LEDs are either red or blue, and the appropriate color for each client is decided by the dermatologist. Although both stimulate the production of collagen, the color selected depends on the objective of the individual seeking treatment. Red LEDs are used for wrinkles, sun damage, and the treatment of rosaea. The procedure is given for 30 minutes, once every seven to ten days for six weeks. Blue LEDs are the best choice for acne, and treatments last 20 minutes. They are given three times a week for two weeks. According to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, blue LEDs have been found to be helpful for skin cancer patients.
Warning
-
Light therapy treatment should be avoided if an individual has health issues such as thyroid conditions or epilepsy. This treatment should also be avoided by women who are pregnant, and those who are photo-allergenic. A person should discuss with their doctor any medication they are on before they begin laser light treatment.
