The Social Impact of Going Green

The Social Impact of Going Green thumbnail
Going green has an affect upon society.

Extremely popular since the dawn of the new millennium, "going green" is a movement focusing on altering behaviors that have a negative impact on the environment. Going green affects several aspects of our daily lives, including the vehicles we drive, businesses we use, and energy we consume. Whether it is on a large global scale or within each individual house, the societal infiltration of going green continues to grow.

  1. Transportation

    • One of the areas of going green that most people are familiar with is transportation. Since the gases released from a vehicle's internal combustion engine are some of the key suspects in global warming, recent attention has been brought to alternative vehicles, including hybrid and electric vehicles. Many companies now manufacture hybrid vehicles, and the automobile industry continues to spend millions of dollars per year researching more eco-friendly alternatives.

    Lighting

    • Lighting is also rapidly changing. Incandescent lighting has dominated homes for over a century. Now, more modern, green alternatives are more readily available. Fluorescent lighting is one of the most popular types of lighting, since it uses 75 percent less energy than incandescent lighting.

    Daily Living

    • Attention has been focused on people's daily, energy-inefficient habits. Wasted electricity has become one of the main targets. People have begun to make an effort to avoid using air conditioners when unnecessary, to avoid wasting water, and to unplug electrical devices when not in use.

    Business

    • Businesses now attempt to utilize more recycled products, lessen the amount of wasted paper, and eliminate excessive wastes from factories and plants. These measures not only help the environment, but they allow businesses to remain in the good graces of the public that has a positive outlook on green businesses.

    Worldwide

    • Going green brings a unity to countries around the world. What one country does ultimately affects another. When one country performs actions that are a detriment to the environment, surrounding countries feel the consequences; therefore, there are global efforts--by countries such as the United States--to collaborate on going green.
