Simmons Mattress vs. King Koil

Simmons and King Coil mattresses have quite different properties. Both manufacturers are well known. The products of these manufacturers have suitability to different consumer needs and budgets.

To an extent, the pricing differences between these manufacturers reflect the cost differential between advanced sleep surface technologies vs. traditional mattress technology.

Simmons

Simmons’ specialty is a concept known as "motion separation." The design of the Simmons Beautyrest line uses pocketed coils, which allows one bed partner to move without disturbing the other. The most basic of the line, Beautyrest Classic, has a price about mid-range for a quality mattress while Beautyrest models with added features come at higher prices. Beautyrest Black luxury models, which incorporate extravagant fabrics, are expensive. For couples, the Simmons Beautyrest line mattresses are generally considered among the best mattresses. Simmons also makes a line of more traditional, innerspring mattresses, the DeepSleep line, which are more suited to those on a limited budget. Finally, Simmons makes the Simmons BackCare mattress specifically for those with back problems.

Simmons's Limitations

Some owners have reported sagging of Beautyrest mattresses after a period of time. Even high-quality mattresses have a life expectancy of only about seven years. However, these owners appear to refer to a much reduced period of time than the seven-year life expectancy. Also, Beautyrest mattresses provide inadequate support for individuals weighing more than 250 pounds.

King Koil

King Koil has made good mattresses for more than 100 years. The primary difference between the King Koil approach to mattress manufacture and that of Simmons is that while Simmons’ primary product lines deal in more recent mattress technology such as pocketed coil with a lesser emphasis on mattresses using more traditional innerspring mattress structure, with King Koil the reverse is the case. King Coil’s three primary lines are King Koil Spine Support, Perfect Contour and Perfect Contour Extraordinaire. The mattresses have different firmness levels and differing features. King Koil has recently begun experimenting with the more updated sleep technologies used by Simmons and other companies and King Koil's products of that type generally get poor ratings overall. The major consideration for those who have budget issues and who find an innerspring mattress adequate for their sleep comfort is that because the innerspring mattress is an older technology, the King Koil line offers a more inexpensive option than most of the Simmons line.

King Koil's Limitations

While reputation-wise King Koil has respect, reviews by users have reported some serious concerns with the King Koil line. User comments at one professional review indicated both serious, and near-immediate, sagging problems with King Koil. Users also indicated problems with King Koil honoring warranties about the sagging mattresses. In another, independent review ranking, for both “Comfortable” vs. “Uncomfortable” and “Durable” vs. “Sags,” the ratio of responses was split almost 50/50 on both characteristics.

Choosing a Mattress

Characteristics such as cost and innerspring vs. pocketed coil technology are weighed in making a purchasing decision. However, firmness varies within the product lines themselves. Therefore, one should always visit a mattress retailer and try out the models before making a final purchasing decision.
