Daybed Vs. Trundle Bed
A daybed is different from a trundle bed. The daybed, sometimes called a couch or a chaise lounge, may appear like a sofa, but it is also a single bed. The trundle bed, on the other hand, is a simple, stand-alone bed that rolls out from and into the underside of a larger bed. The trundle bed is known to have existed since the 16th century and the daybed since the 17th century. Does this Spark an idea?

Daybed
-
When accessorized, a daybed looks like a couch. The daybed has frames made of metal or wood, ends of equal heights and backs of varying shapes and heights. The daybed can be used as a couch when the mattress is accessorized with cushions or a spread and, for added comfort, pillows or cushions placed against the back frame. A forerunner of the chaise lounge, it is sometimes called by that name. Daybeds usually have six to eight legs, some reinforced by connecting crosspieces.
Trundle Bed
-
Trundle beds have legs with wheels or casters. These allow them to be rolled out of sight beneath a larger bed when not in use. Trundle beds, often called "truckle" beds, are designed lower so that they fit under the "master," or larger bed. The frames are often in oak.

History of Daybeds
-
Variations of the daybed reach as far back as a first-century Greek sculpture depicting a noble reclining in a backless, elongated seat with curved ends. The French, centuries later, made several types of chaise lounges, including the "duchesse," with a rounded back, and a "duchesse brisee," with two or three separate parts.
History of Trundle Beds
-
The trundle bed was originally developed as a bed for servants who slept in the room with their masters. Historically, it also has been used for children who slept in the same room with their parents.
Daybed with Trundle Bed
-
Today, a combination of the daybed and trundle bed is available. The trundle bed simply rolls beneath the daybed as it has done for centuries with its master bed. The frames are just like those for the simpler daybeds, with ends of the same height and a standard back. Frames are made in a variety of materials.
