What Is Match Betting?
Betting is a way for many people to win money on sporting events, and to make the game a little more exciting. Match betting is a unique, legal style of betting in which only two participants are bet on. No matter how many others are present, the match bet concerns only two of them.

Match Betting
-
In order to place a match bet you have to have an event with at least two competitors. Odds are given on individuals placing against each other, rather than on the event overall. So for instance, you could bet on a tennis match or a boxing match because there are two participants. You could also select two specific individuals in a race and see who beats who, regardless of how they place in the overall race.
Popular Sports
-
Match betting is more popular for certain sports than for others. Horse racing is a popular sport if you want to place a bet that one horse will beat another, even if you know that horse won't be the one that wins the race. The same goes for humans who are racing. As stated above, tennis and boxing are good sports for match betting, but so is bowling since individuals compete with individual scores.

Impossible Sports
-
Match betting doesn't work for all types of events though. Popular American sports like football and basketball don't lend themselves to match betting. Any game where players are not scored individually on their performance and then that performance is combined at the end of the event to make a team score doesn't work for match betting. For instance, one bowler from one team can be compared to another bowler on another team with definitive scores, but you can't compare two full backs during a football game against each other in the same way without some wrangling.
Requirements
-
In order to match bet on an event, you need to have individuals who compete and score on their own merit. Games like football, where you win or lose as a team, aren't really applicable. Games like bowling though are, because while you compete as a team you perform and score as individuals. So you could take on bowler's performance and see if he beat another bowler's performance as a match bet.
Odds
-
Odds for match betting have to be figured differently than odds for betting on an entire team. While a complete team might have certain odds to beat another complete team, individuals on that team may perform above or below the team's average. So if you don't like the odds of a team, but you feel strongly about an individual player, a match bet will allow you to bet that one player may beat another player regardless of the total outcome of the game.
