Medicaid & Pregnancy in Kansas
For women who don't have medical insurance that covers pregnancy or who are still in the waiting period for their maternity coverage to kick in, finding a way to pay for the pregnancy can be difficult. Low-income pregnant women in Kansas can enroll in the Medicaid program, which pays all their pregnancy-related medical bills.

Eligibility
-
In order to be eligible for Medicaid in Kansas, pregnant women must provide proof of their pregnancy, proof of income, proof of U.S. citizenship and a completed application. The income limit for Kansas Medicaid for pregnant women is based on family size, including the unborn child. As of March 18, 2009, the income limit for a family of three was $2,289 a month. There is a $300 work expense reduction for each family member that works.
Types
-
Once accepted, pregnant women will have the choice between two programs offered through Kansas Medicaid: Children's Mercy Family Health Partners and Unicare. Each of these plans covers the same pregnancy-related expenses but do not always offer services through the same providers.
-
Benefits
-
If there were pregnancy-related medical expenses incurred before the Medicaid application was approved, the applicant can request that all of her pregnancy-related medical bills from the previous three months be paid or reimbursed.
Effects
-
Once the child is born, the mother should call Kansas Medicaid and let the agency know about the delivery. This will place the newborn into the Kansas Medicaid program for 12 months without completing a second application, and it will also extend the mother's coverage for up to two months after the birth.
Considerations
-
If the mother fails to notify Kansas Medicaid of the birth of her child, the child's portion of medical bills may not be covered, and the mother's coverage will end one month after her original due date. The mother can still receive payment of her child's medical bills by filling out a Kansas Medicaid application for her newborn with all of the required documents and request that all medical bills from the previous three months be covered for the child.
