Traditional Irish Wedding Music

Incorporate traditional Irish music into your cultural wedding.

There is plenty of traditional Irish music available to play during both a wedding ceremony and reception. Have fun picking out Irish music for your traditional wedding while choosing wisely. Consult elders in your family for ideas and make sure to listen to your chosen music instead of simply going by title.

  1. Pre-ceremony Music

    • Before the ceremony commences, certain Irish songs can be played in the church or venue. Popular choices include Druidstone's "Haste to the Wedding," The Chieftains' "Madame Cole," Sunita's "Women of Ireland" and Northern Lights' "Carolan's Ramble to Cashel."

    Procession Music

    • During the procession of the bridesmaids, popular song choices include "You're the One" by The Chieftains or "March of the King of Laoise" by Sunita. While the bride is walking down the aisle, popular Irish song choices include "Lark in the Clear Air" by James Galway, "Processional" by DruidStone or "The Pearl" by Silly Wizard.

    Additional Songs

    • Additional traditional Irish songs to play during your wedding include "Morghan Meaghan" by Riley and Bob McNally; "Bridget Cruise" by Dominig Bouchaud and Cyrille Colas; and '"Tribute to Bunting" by The Chieftains. "Give Me Your Hand" by James Galway and The Chieftains, "Eleanor Plunkett" by Deanta, and "Mabel Kelly" and "Alleluia" by James Galway and The Chieftains are also popular choices.

    Music Compilations

    • The Dublin Diocesan Liturgical Resource Centre has put out a CD compilation with Irish music that is appropriate during the ceremony. "The Vow -- An Irish Wedding Celebration" is also a popular compilation album. Be careful of certain compilations or albums that have the terms "Irish wedding" in the title -- this does not necessarily mean it's full of appropriate wedding music.

    Music to Avoid

    • The song "She Moved Through the Fair" is often played during Irish weddings and other celebrations. While the lyrics speak of an upcoming wedding day, keep in mind that this song is written from the perspective of a future bride who is also a ghost. It may not be the type of song you'd really like played at your wedding. Also, before settling on particular music for the ceremony, check with your church to find out what is -- and is not -- allowed. For example, certain Catholic churches may not allow any music that isn't religious to be played.
