How Is a Feather Bed Used?
A feather bed is a type of overlay for a bed or mattress that is between three and four inches thick. The pad is filled with feathers that produce an extremely soft and cushy pad. For allergy sufferers, there are even synthetic feather beds produced. There are many ways to use a feather bed, which makes the purchase of a feather bed a very good investment. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Warmth
-
One of the first uses for a feather bed was warmth. Feather beds are full of real insulating feathers designed to keep ducks or other birds warm during the winter. This produces a highly effective insulating layer that is ideal for trapping heat on cold nights. Feather beds are also useful as comforters and blankets.
Comfort
-
Feather beds are soft. Simply place the feather bed on top of the mattress and place the sheet over the feather bed. This provides an additional three or four inches of soft padding that can make even the hardest mattress extremely comfortable.
-
Pallet
-
In a pinch, a feather bed turns into a wonderfully comfortable pallet. If an air mattress or extra bed is not on hand, a feather bed spread over the floor makes a comfortable temporary sleeping spot for house guests or children. The addition of extra blankets or pillows under the feather bed makes a pallet that is nearly as comfortable as a real bed.
Mattress
-
In some European countries, the feather bed is the only mattress used. The feather bed is laid directly over the box spring or mattress box. This provides a very cushy sleeping surface with a hard layer underneath. This produces a soft yet firm feeling that many people find comfortable for a mattress.
Warning
-
Make sure to avoid the use of a feather bed as a mattress with young children and babies. Babies and young children can suffocate in soft, cushy bedding. Young children need a harder sleeping surface. The elderly may also suffer from the use of feather beds if they are bedridden. Feather beds can trap heat, which may cause bed sores to form.
