Life Skill Coach Training

A life skills coach enables clients to improve their lives.

A life skills coach draws out the best in people so they can make decisions that improve their lives. Coaches are hired to help individuals sort out professional or personal problems. Life skills coaching differs from therapy or counseling, because the coach does not claim to have the answers. The role of a life skills coach is to help a client find the answer. People who are interested in helping others in a meaningful way may be interested in becoming one.

  1. Educational Requirements

    • No educational requirements exist to become a life skills coach. Individuals can draw on experience and educational backgrounds in a variety of areas, such as education, business, communications, law or health care. Certification programs are available that may give a life skills coach more credibility with clients or companies.

    Skills

    • A life skills coach has listening skills, which put a client at ease and enable the coach to identify qualities in the client that will lead to success without judgment. Communication skills are also important to interpret and give proper feedback. The coach must be able to promote a good rapport with clients, as coaching is about teamwork, and the coach's job is to enable the client, rather than direct. A good coach must also be able to identify motivations and have a firm belief that every person is capable of achieving more.

    Specializations

    • According to Business Balls, there are a number of life skills coaches working as spiritual coaches, parent coaches, career coaches and financial coaches. Growing areas include education and health care settings. Who you choose to coach is dependent on your life experience, business expertise and people skills.

    Self Employed

    • Many life skills coaches are self-employed and attracted to the profession because of the freedom it brings to choose who to work with and when. These coaches work from home, and much of the coaching is done over the telephone, without ever meeting the client in person. Those interested in working from home will need to have skills in marketing to build a client base.

    Training Programs

    • If you choose to enroll in a life skills coaching certification program, choose one that offers a curriculum that complements your experience and interests. Look for one that provides practical information on coaching skills, marketing and, if you plan to be self-employed, offers classes on being an entrepreneur. An opportunity to practice your coaching skills and get feedback on your coaching is also important.

You should leave the program confident in your newfound knowledge to build a client base, deliver quality coaching, including helping the client develop a plan of action based on his or her skills, and have a community of coaches to refer to for feedback and get ideas.
