Glycolic Acid Peels for Acne
Those who suffer from acne usually try many methods to alleviate pimples, oily skin and discoloration. While some methods, such as using skin serums, soaps and makeup formulated for acne, are not always effective, chemical peels can significantly reduce acne symptoms. One type of chemical peel, the glycolic acid peel, is commonly used to treat mild to moderate acne.

Glycolic Acid
-
Glycolic acid, also known as hydroxyacetic acid, is the smallest of all alpha hydroxy acids, organic and nontoxic. It is used in facial peels for acne because it causes rapid skin cell exfoliation, or shedding, yet is relatively mild in comparison to other acids used in chemical skin peels--there is usually no lasting discomfort or painful skin irritation. Because it causes rapid skin cell renewal, glycolic acid peels are often used to smooth the skin, diminish discoloration and relieve mild to moderate acne.
Setting
-
Glycolic peels are offered in several types of places: salons that offer aesthetic services; dermatologist offices; medical spas; and day spas. The cost for a glycolic peel varies depending on the type of provider you get it from. Typically, more than one chemical peel is needed to see lasting results, so you will need to revisit your facialist or dermatologist three to six times for the peels to reach their maximum efficacy.

Peel Process
-
To begin with, the technician or dermatologist will thoroughly wash and dry your face, and then apply the glycolic acid peel. Mild stinging is common, but it should not be unbearable or extremely uncomfortable. After approximately three minutes, the peel is removed with the aid of a neutralizing agent. When getting a glycolic acid peel from a day spa or aesthetician, they will usually suggest getting a facial treatment following your peel, such as a smoothing, soothing or moisturizing mask.
Post-Treatment
-
The Johns Hopkins Cosmetic Center recommends that you not use makeup for at least three hours following a glycolic acid peel and to avoid products with glycolic acid or any other alpha or beta hydroxy acids for three days. Sunscreen is essential to keep your skin from getting irritated, as it will be a bit more sensitive to sunlight than usual, according to the Center.
Effectiveness
-
When obtained regularly, glycolic acid peels have been found to be effective at treating mild to moderate acne, according to a study done by the Saint Louis University School of Medicine . Ask your dermatologist or facialist to help you come up with a peel regimen to keep your acne under control.
